21 Reasons Why We Love South Glengarry: Char-Lan Recreation Centre [3 of 21]

Welcome to our new blog series, where Jenni MacDonald and I take you on a weekly journey to discover the hidden gems of South Glengarry in Eastern Ontario. Over the course of 21 weeks, we’ll share our favourite attractions and activities in the area, all based on our personal experiences. Let’s begin exploring the incredible South Glengarry, stretching from the St. Lawrence River to Valleyview Road and from Boundary Road to the Quebec border.

Reason #4: Char-Lan Recreation Centre

I’m thrilled to introduce you to the Char-Lan Recreation Centre in Williamstown, the only indoor arena in the area. This hub of activity becomes particularly lively during the winter months, offering skating and hockey for all ages. I’ve had the pleasure of watching local children, including my own granddaughters, learn to skate on this very ice, under the care of exceptional instructors!

From September to March, the Township of South Glengarry sponsors free public skate days at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre. Throughout the winter, the Centre also hosts “Stick and Puck” programs where hockey enthusiasts can hone their skills.

From May to June, ball hockey and lacrosse leagues take over, featuring different divisions. Nordic Pole walking activities are available at various times throughout the year. If you’re a fan of racquet sports, the Centre boasts two tennis courts and four pickleball courts during the summer season, from May to mid-August.

“Balance for Life” physical activities for seniors are offered in Tartan Hall, located on the second floor of the Char-Lan Recreation Centre. This fully licensed facility can be rented for private events, complete with tables, chairs, a full kitchen, restrooms, Wi-Fi, and an audio system. I’ve attended several private events at Tartan Hall, and I can personally attest to the excellent experience!
